My first quilled portrait!!

Hi all,

It's already last working day of 2017!! All excited for 2018 right! Well...Wish you all a very happy  and peaceful new year!!

For today's post, it is going to be the first quilled portrait I made of my close friend's son!! The idea about this started two years ago..definitely not by me..It's she who came up with this idea of making her son's picture with quilling!! I was terrified of the thought because was not sure how to capture the eyes and expressions of human face with quilling!! So conveniently kept the thought aside :-)( Easy job right ;-) )

Happy and smiling kiddo :-)
One day when had enough courage to give it a try, it all started!! It definitely took more time than any of my other projects till date! Started with eyes first.. Happy that they didn't turn out angry eyes (which is usually the case when I draw ;-) )  and then comes the smiling face ! Had to rework few times to achieve the expression! Very happy with the way whole thing turned out! My friend was very happy with it too .. Happy me :-) :-)

Next to the original picture!!
I should try another portrait in 2018! Let me know what do you think of this work!!

Have a happy weekend and a very happy new year!!

Table centerpiece with quilled flowers!!

Hello all,

It's been ages I have visited this place :-( My bad!

For today's post, I am going to show you guys how a simple cardboard box turned into a table centerpiece with little bit of DIY and quilling! Inspired from pinterest,  always wanted to make a centerpiece for dining table. Once I found the cardboard box, jumped on to the job at hand. Have glued the jute twine to the cardboard with hot glue gun. It's time to add bit of color. There enters quilling. Made three simple flowers and some leaves. Made an arrangment on one side of the box. Tadaaa.. my centerpiece is ready. Loved the way those flowers sit against the rustic jute backdrop!!

Rustic beauty!!
My actual plan is to make some yarn balls of different colors( that's another DIY) and arrange them with some serial lights in the box! For now the box is ready and waiting for me to make the yarn balls(Lazy me!!)

How do you like the idea of converting a boring cardboard box into a decorative piece.  Let me know what you think!!Have a great week !!

With love,

Quilled Stag!!

Hi There.

Let's have a quick post on the quilled stag I made last year!! I liked the way quilling brought out the muscularity of the stag!! Have used 3 mm strips for both stag and the grass. Have you noticed those tiny flowers! They definitely added some color to the frame! Don't you agree!

Just to get a grass effect, I have sponge painted green acrylic as grass bed!! While framing this work, I wanted a rustic look for the finished product. So used some old twigs and a jute twine to make a frame and covered the work with transparent plastic sheet to avoid dust!

Have hanged the work with same twine on a wall. In love with the rustic look! Have a great week guys!

Love,

One year of blogging!!!

Hello all,

Today I have turned one as a blogger. Yayyyy :-) Still remember the hesitation I had before starting this blog! After a much needed push from friends, this blog was born. I am very happy with the blogging journey so far! Very recently Cecelia from Paper Zen( A biiiiiggggg fan of her work. She has  3 published books on quilling to her credit) gave great feedback for my Quilled Peacock. I am on cloud nine:-) :-)

For today's post, I made this Quilled monogram to celebrate the 1st anniversary !! It was long pending to make an attempt at Quillography( For those of you wondering about the word..its nothing but Quilled calligraphy). Loved the way things turned out!! Much needed boost to start a bit tougher calligraphy styles!

Used 5 mm and 3 mm strips for this work! The size of it is 4.5*3.5 ''(in Inches).

A little crown too :-)
Don't you love the blue flower ? Made it by cutting 3 mm strips length wise into two 1.5 mm strips. It's really amazing to work with thinner strips. Thinner strips gives us the flexibility to make petals near to life like ! Let me know what you think of this work!

Have a great weekend and Happy Ganesh Chaturthi in advance!!

Cheers,
Vinee

Quilled Rajasthani lady!!

Hello all,

It's been a month since my last post! For today's post, it is going to be beautiful Quilled Rajasthani lady. Ever since I got enough confidence in doing big works(yes...A4 size is big enough for me), wanted to do a Rajasthani lady carrying those water pots on her head walking in dessert. It's a tough job for them but the sight of ladies wearing most beautiful and colorful dresses is just great.. Took a pencil sketch as an inspiration and then started one of the trickiest works of mine !

Yeah I say tricky because getting the effect of lehenga's frills was a bit tough! But not as tough as I thought it would be. Well! as they say, you never know what you are capable of until you try ☺ Only 3 mm strips were used for the work. I love working with thinner strips. Yet to try with 2 mm though!

Here comes the colorful lady! Loved absolutely the way her lehenga with the border turned out. For the desert, have glued real sand as dunes.

Part of daily chores!

Don't you love the border design!!!

Closer look for details!!

I proudly say this is my best work so far! What do you guys think! Feel free to let me know in the comments.

Have a happy weekend!!

Mighty Monarch Butterfly!!

Hi all,

Today's post, we are going to see quilled version of the mighty Monarch Butterfly! All of us would have definitely seen these colorful beauties once in our lives. Haven't we!!

For my quilled version, I have taken a drawing of the butterfly as reference and the results came out very nice! Why wouldn't it. Classic orange and Black combination makes wonders right!!

All set to fly high  !!
Before framing it, I used to arrange the butterfly in random places like among the flowers in flower vases, stick it to the weight of a wind chime. That was fun as it looked like a real butterfly was visiting home!(Dint have any pictures though).

Framed ..Safe and sound!!
Hope you liked it too!! Feel free post your comments!

Have a happy weekend.

Quilled Toucan!!

Hi all,

Today's post, it is Quilled Toucan! There is a story behind this. I came across this beautiful birdie with most colorful big beak for the first time when I watched Rio movie(now u remember it from the movie right :-)) and fell in love. Dint know it's name then. After couple of years when I wanted to make a Quilled bird, couldn't think of anything else!! Then comes the search for the bird name referring Rio movie and there it is.. Beautiful Toucan!!

I recently got a chance to watch these beauties in person and they are feast to eyes !! Here it is. My Quilled version of the "Toucan".

Completed and framed!!
Before starting with the project, big concern was with claws and how to achieve the effect of them holding to the branch!! In the end they turned out fine!! Liked the way everything came into life and I feel I did justice to the beauty with this work. What do you think!

A better angle to see the details!

Original and its Quilled twin ;)
Have a happy weekend!!

Quilled Car hangings!!

Hello all,

Its time for some of the car hangings I made! One of my early quilled creations was a car hanging. That was made for parents' new car. It was a butterfly!

When I see it now, I think to myself...Please hide it some where. There was no technique. nothing. Only excitement to create some thing with colored strips(Hand cut from colored sheets. Now I buy quilled strips!)

With time, I definitely got some experience! When got the opportunity, gave it a second shot. This time it is fringed flowers!! Had to cut too many blue strips to make these tiny fringed flowers!! Here it is...Blue heart with fringed flowers❤❤❤❤

A closer look !!
Isn't it pretty!! Parents have retired the old butterfly and replaced it with the blue heart now ☺☺☺

Here is the second hanging. This time it comes in mango shape ☺ For this, I wanted to try Indian mehandi design! Had to cut the card board in desired shape! Two coats of painting for the white background and working with small pieces of paper to achieve the mehandi design!! Thoroughly enjoyed the making. Don't you think it turned out well!!

Mango it is!!

Thats it for now guys.. Have a happy weekend!!

Quilled Heart again!

Hello all,

A very happy Valentines day to all of you!!!

The other day when I was thinking about the topic to write, I could think of only one thing.. Tamilnadu Government crisis! With all the fuss that is going on in media, one thing kept me wondering! Just because you were a  friend to powerful leader once, does that necessarily make you a leader?? By the time I started drafting today, supreme court gave its judgement after a verrrrryyyyyyy long time of more than twenty years! Better late than never I guess!Watching news telecast now, one more thing caught my eye! OPS supporters are celebrating the judgement and distributing sweets!! Is this the celebration time? I mean the judgement just made your late leader a convict of disproportionate assets !! Well. Thats my point of view!

Coming to my quilled work, its valentines day special. Another quilled heart! In my first heart, leaves were of crepe paper. Here everything is of quilling. All the flowers are made with tight coils and water proofed also. Leaves are all loose coils with different shades of green! For pollen, I have used store bought ready made pollen strands. Struggled a bit while assembling but it's of worth..Loved the way it turned out. Every thing falls in right place.

I like the shadow effect very much!!

All set for the next step!!

Between first and second heart, first one is my favorite. What's yours?
Thats it for now. Have a great week!!

Quilled earrings!!

Hello all,

Starting from December till January, it's all festivities, holidays, new year celebrations and then comes big festival Sankranthi. Love this season especially Sankranthi...Have fond memories of childhood with all our cousins meet at grand parent's place. On Bhogi early mornings we used to run to the bhogi manta(bonfire) at the end of the street...On Sankranthi pooja, new dresses and so many sweets.Yummm...Love those days...  All family gatherings, friends, holidays. Too many varieties of food  and for food lovers like me, It's heaven.. Ahhh almost forgot...Shopppppping. Too many offers to choose from. People who are crazy for shopping go nuts this time of the year(no, I am not at all a shopping freak). Holidays for kids' schools, vacation time :-) On the whole, two months jam packed with fun.

And for quilling, today I am going to show you some of the ear rings I have made with quilling paper. I love paper jhumkas very much. The finishing we can achieve with paper jhumkas is unbelievable and don't worry, they are water resistant too. Now all my favorite dresses have a perfect matching jhumkas.. Happy me :-)

Here they go. I absolutely love them<3 what about you! Curious to know!

Black and gold! My best till date <3

Love the colors on the peacock!!

Black and white...All time favorite combo!!

These were the first quilled jhumkas I have made! Lot of improvement right!!

My first trail with Jhumkas!!

Quilled Tiger and Cub!!

Hello all,

First of all A very happy new year 2017 :) Though bit late with the wishes, it's never too late :)  This is time of the year every one  have a list of things with priorities ordered!Yeah.. talking about Resolutions!! I am sure most of you would have finalized your list for this year 2017...That's a good step...but people like me, that's the only step we take ;-) and the next time we think about resolution is, the next new year;-)I know I am not alone here.At least some of you are having a smile relating this to yourselves :-) This year I decided to enroll myself for a painting class...fingers crossed and determined to take more steps this time !!

Being the first post of this year, here comes the biggest of my quilled works till date...After my successful attempt of the National Bird, decided to give tribute to the national Animal..I was bit skeptical on how to proceed with the tiger's face..So started with body first and left the faces till last!! I wanted to capture the facial expressions and very satisfied with the way they turned out.. It took almost 15 days time (was working on and off ) and lots n lots of quilling strips to fold and roll..Worth the effort and loved it <3

That's all for now.. Let me know how you like it and see you all next time guys!!
